DAKAR 2017

Dimanche, 1er janvier 2017.

Vérifications administratives : CONMEBOL (Asuncion. Paraguay)
Vérifications techniques : BASE AEREA NU GUAZU (Asuncion. Paraguay)
Briefing : TEATRO MUNICIPAL (Asuncion. Paraguay)
Podium départ : COSTANERA, LITORAL DEL PALACIO DE GOBIERNO (Asuncion. Paraguay)

DAKAR 2017

Sunday, January 1, 2017
Administrative check: Conmebol (Asuncion, Paraguay)
Technical check: Base Arena Nu Iguazu (Asuncion, Paraguay)
Briefing: Teatro Municipal (Asuncion, Paraguay)
Starting podium: Costanera, Litoral del Palacio de Gobierno (Asuncion, Paraguay)

“This will be a very difficult Dakar, the hardest since we have been in South America,” says Mac Coma, five times bike winner and now Sports Director of the Dakar rally. You may think the skies heard him as heavy storms and high temperatures (36 Celcius degrees, but it feels like 46) hit competitors arriving from winter in Europe. After completing the administrative and technical checks, and celebrated the New Year, the five crews of Polaris Xtremeplus met on Sunday at 3 pm, for the competitor’s briefing and then at the starting podium in Asuncion for the official start of the Dakar 2017.

These year, Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO) launched a new challenge and opens a fifth category for the SSV of all factories (10 taking the race start this year) that the Xtremeplus Polaris Team has won for the past five years, and now targets another victory.  “It is great news that ASO took our category into consideration because, to me, it has a great future. In fact, this is a category that allows beginners to get into the race for a reasonable price, and it offers the same benefit to bike riders that would like to make their transition to 4 wheels. We have proved that we can finish the race with Polaris, and even be placed well in the standings with our small buggy, Willy Alcaraz was 40th overall last year! It is not a fast vehicle, so it doesn’t scare beginners, but it’s fun, it allows to go through every terrain and it is reliable,” says Marco Piana.

This is the 39th version of the Dakar and the Xtremeplus Polaris Factory Team brings no less than 5 vehicles, which is half of the plateau on the SSV category, and three nationalities: 3 Chinese, 1 Brazilian and 1 Russian!

The race program for the Dakar 2017 includes 12 stages, half of these over 3,000 meters above sea level, and 9,000 kilometers’ total. Seven of the stages will be longer than 400 km and the landscapes that competitors will cross include from the tropical forest to the Bolivian Altiplano before heading to the dry desert of Northwest Argentina.

Tomorrow, competitors will cover the first 454 km to reach Resistencia in Argentina. The first special stage of the race will take place in Paraguay, with a timed section of 39 kilometers.
